By finding new genetic targets and markers for gastrointestinal cancers, Dr Valeri aims to be able to improve treatment for his colorectal cancer patients. In this short expert research talk, Dr Nicola Valeria explains his research into the effects of microRNA deregulation and silencing, focusing on microRNAs that promote cancer progression by affecting downstream pathways of colorectal cancer (CRC). MicroRNA-135b, or miR-135b, was found in this work to be over-expressed in colorectal cancer and is associated with poor clinical outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. When tested in animal models, Dr Valeri found that silencing this microRNA caused reductions in the number and size of tumours in mice. Dr Nicola Valeri is a clinician scientist in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Biology and Genomics Team at the Institute for Cancer Research.
