Fire Safety for Complex Buildings – The Need for Holistic Design

This presentation explores what is a “complex building” and whether this is just a term for a higher risk building.The approach to holistic design for fire safety will be explored and why it is critical in the case of more complex buildings.Very important to this approach is to embrace all the NCC Performance Requirements, and to address all fire safety performance objectives, including those beyond the NCC.Also critical is to really understand the occupant characteristics on the one hand, and also the fire hazards and potential fire scenarios on the other hand.These issues need to form the foundation of the fire safety strategy and fire safety measures for the building which drives the fire safety engineering analysis as well as the construction inspections and final fire safety handbook which should be handed to the building owners, managers and occupants at the handover of the project.
