Are contact naps normal for babies? In this video, we explore why many babies sleep best when they are held and why contact naps are one of the most common patterns in early infant sleep. When babies fall asleep in arms, on a caregiver’s chest, or in a sling or carrier, their nervous system often becomes more regulated, helping them settle into sleep more easily. Looking at baby sleep through a developmental lens reveals why contact naps are so common. Infant sleep cycles are shorter, regulation systems are still maturing, and babies rely heavily on proximity to caregivers to feel safe enough to sleep. For many infants, contact naps provide the sensory input and co-regulation that support sleep during the early months of life. We also explore why some babies rely on contact naps more than others. Differences in temperament, sensory sensitivity, and nervous system development can influence how easily babies sleep in different environments. This helps explain why some babies transition to crib naps quickly while others need more support for longer. Finally, we look at how sleep changes as babies grow. As nervous systems mature and sleep cycles lengthen, many babies naturally become more comfortable sleeping in different spaces. This means that contact naps during early infancy do not automatically prevent independent sleep later. Understanding the biology and development behind contact naps can help parents respond to baby sleep with more confidence and less pressure to follow rigid sleep expectations.
