Your ants survived winter — but spring is where most colonies get stressed. Waking ants up after winter (hibernation / diapause) isn’t about rushing heat or food. Warm them too fast, feed too early, or check too often — and spring just… doesn’t take off. In this video, I show you how to safely wake up ants after winter, using a gentle warm-up approach that reduces stress and supports healthy brood development. We’ll cover slow temperature increases, when to feed (and when not to), hydration checks, and why some very strange behaviour is completely normal at this stage. This guide applies whether your ants overwintered in a fridge, garage, shed, or cool room, and it’s suitable for both beginners and experienced ant keepers. If you’ve ever checked your ants in early spring and thought “are they okay?” — this video is for you. ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 — Why spring is harder than winter 00:35 — The first mistake most keepers make 01:10 — How to warm ants safely after winter 02:15 — When to feed (and when not to) 03:05 — Hydration checks & normal weird behaviour 04:10 — What NOT to do in early spring 04:40 — When your ants are fully awake ☕ Optional Support If you’ve found Antastic Tom helpful and want to support the channel, you can buy me a coffee here: https://ko-fi.com/antastictom There’s absolutely no pressure — watching, learning, and taking good care of your ants is already more than enough. 🔔 Join the Antastic Team!
