India AI News: AI Label, 3 Hour Takedown of Social Media Videos | AI Regulation for Instagram, FB, X

The government has tightened India’s IT rules to crack down on the misuse of artificial intelligence on social media platforms such as YouTube and X, mandating takedown of unlawful content within three hours and compulsory labelling of all AI-generated or synthetic content. The amended rules, notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), respond to a surge in AI-driven deepfakes, non-consensual intimate imagery and deceptive videos impersonating individuals or fabricating real-world events. The changes come into force on February 20, 2026. Under the new framework, platforms must remove illegal content flagged by the government or courts within three hours, down from the earlier 36-hour deadline. For content involving nudity or sexually explicit content, the takedown timeline has been cut to just two hours. User grievance redressal timelines have also been shortened. Intermediaries - or platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, or Youtube - are also required to deploy automated tools to prevent the circulation of illegal, deceptive or sexually exploitative AI content, including child abuse material, impersonation, false documents and non-consensual imagery. Moreover, these platforms must require users to declare whether content is AI-generated and verify such declarations before publishing.
