Just south of Horsham in West Sussex is the 3,500 acre Knepp Castle Estate. Since 2001 the estate has been devoted to a "pioneering rewilding project", letting the land re-wild without human intervention aided primarily by free roaming grazing animals such as Old English long horn cattle, deer, Exmoor ponies and wild pigs. By giving nature the freedom to establish it's own ecosystem the estate has seen many species of flora and fauna flourish including the return of some rare species like the Turtle Dove and the Emperor Butterfly. After reading the book Wilding by Isabella Tree I have been very keen to see the the estate for myself. I finally managed a visit on a very typical English winter's day in December of this year.
