Kilis: A Neighbour Of War

City on the southern border of Turkey, neighbour to war in Syria, world’s largest refugee-hosting city and hosts over 120,000 Syrian refugees. Figure exceeds that of most EU states. Refugees surpass the city’s 90,000 population. Residents here: share food with refugees, give them jobs, give them shelter but also, end up being killed by DAESH terrorists. Shelling from a DAESH stronghold across the border occurs often. Since the beginning of 2016, 18 people have been killed. Almost half were refugees who fled for their lives; but death by war still found them. The rest were locals. Despite the attacks, residents continue aiding refugees. Some say the city deserves a Nobel Prize; others say it’s a far-fetched dream. But one thing is sure: the world is in awe of the selfless nature of the people of Kilis.
