A set of variations on an eight-bar theme based on the Renaissance popular song used by many composers ( see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Une_jeu..., ascribed in its source, the Schele manusript finished in 1619 and kept in Hamburg Staats-Bibliothek, to John Dowland (the Ms. title is 'Del excellentissimo musico Jano Dulando'). To anyone familiar with Dowland's style, it is immediately clear that this attribution is false. The lengthy composition, extending over some 240 bars, is strikingly monotonous and scanty in musical ideas, with individual variations showing no harmonic development at all. This notwithstanding, it is still an excellent piece for demonstrating a lute's playability throughout its whole range, which is precisely what I have been asked to do. The instrument played here is a standard "Thomann" (aka "Roosebeck" aka "Lute Society") lute, after being attended to by a competent lute-maker who put on some decent strings (Aquila nylgut), tied on the new gut frets and filed the nut. The result is an eminently playable instrument. The tablature supposes the use of a 10-course lute with diapasons in F and C, but, transposing only 4 notes by an octave, one can perform it on an 8-course instrument.
