*New Videos Every Sunday* This is the first episode of a series of videos I will be making documenting the design and fabrication of a chair I am currently working on. Episode 1: This episode looks at the initial structural concept of the chair and sourcing the wood from a lumber yard in Queens, New York. In the coming episodes I will be looking at 3D modeling, computer aided manufacture using a CNC mill, woodworking, steam bending and glue laminating. I designed and fabricated the original Bow Spring Chair as part of a furniture making workshop at Harvard and MIT in 2014. I was interested in how the arms and legs of the chair could work in unison as a type of double bow spring structure – becoming extremely strong under direct loading, yet flexible and responsive to the shifting load of the user. The legs/arms of the chair are made from steam bent, glue laminated strips of ash, and the seat is made from glue laminated birch plywood. Throughout the semester I employed many different techniques of fabrication from hand files to CNC lathes. This series of videos will look at how I develop the design further and attempt to get the chair to market.
