Jaipal Singh Munda is one of the tallest leaders of the Adivasis in India. He was born in a small village called Takra Pahan in present-day Jharkhand. He belonged to the Munda tribe and came from a family of Pahans. He was one of only two Adivasi members of the constituent assembly and made a huge contribution in the making of the Indian constitution. He forcefully argued for the rights of the tribal population in the parliament. He was opposed to viewing Adivasis as economically and technologically backward communities. He rather exhibited unabated faith in and regard for the indigenous roots and the distinctive way of living of the Adivasis, to address the Adivasi issues in both the social and political spaces.
