Here's a tour of the deep litter chick coop that I made from materials purchased at the local big box store for about $600. It's called a deep litter coop because it has 18 inches of litter in it. At the time of the video, it only had about 4 inches so it's kind of misleading. The deep litter coop only needs to be cleaned out about every six months. I do stir it up every once in and while with a stick. This one has a foundation that is 8 feet by 4 feet, a shed roof, external nest boxes, and a back door that turns into a window. It is very easy to clean. 2022 Update: I built a fenced-in run outside of it and generally let the chickens move freely between both areas. Right now there are four chickens and it is producing about 2 dozen eggs per week during the warmer months. Footprint: 8 feet by 4 feet Coop (interior): 4 feet x 3.75 feet + Nestboxes Shed Roof: Low wall = 5.5 feet tall High wall = 6.5 feet tall Materials: 1/2 inch Hardware Cloth, 2x3 Kiln Dried studs (whitewood), Tuftex gray smoke clear poly roof All of the wood was sealed/stained before assembling the coop. Cost to build = about $600 References: How to Build Chicken Coops - By S. Johnson & D. Johnson
