In addition to steady state response, control engineers are generally more concerned about transient response of control systems. The transient response of a first order system is mainly characterized by the speed of the response, time constant, rise time and settling time, all give information about speed of the response. For second order systems, the response is characterized by its speed as well as shape. The shape of response for a second order systems is categorized as over-damped response, under-damped response, critically damped response and undamped response. This lecture relates the shape of response with location of poles of system. Thus, response of the second system can be qualitatively described by looking at the location of poles of the system.
