Britain’s Cold War Nuclear Artillery – Project E and the forgotten 1980s atomic frontline. During the height of the Cold War 1961 - 1981, Western Europe stood on the brink of nuclear war. While the world’s attention remained focused on intercontinental ballistic missiles and strategic bombers, a lesser-known but equally devastating nuclear force lay hidden in the forests and fields of West Germany, the British Army (BAOR) Cold War nuclear artillery. This documentary delves into the secretive history of Project E, a program that saw British forces between 1958 - 1991 armed with American-controlled nuclear warheads, stationed at the very frontline of NATO’s defence. From the 1960s through to the final days of the Cold War in the early 1990s, these weapons formed an essential, yet often overlooked, component of Britain’s military strategy in Western Europe, minecraft. Throughout this film, we will explore the full scope of Britain’s nuclear artillery, from the massive 8-inch howitzers capable of firing nuclear shells, to the Honest John rocket system, a battlefield nuclear weapon designed to strike deep into Warsaw Pact territory. We will also uncover the role of the Lance missile, introduced in the 1970s to modernize Britain’s nuclear strike capabilities until the end of the Cold War.. But how did these weapons fit into Britain’s Cold War strategy? And why was the British Army dependent on American nuclear warheads? Through declassified documents, expert analysis, and first-hand accounts from former military personnel, we will reveal the high-stakes world of tactical nuclear warfare—where British soldiers trained for the unthinkable: launching nuclear strikes on friendly European soil. As tensions rose between NATO and the Soviet Union, these weapons were seen as both a deterrent and a last line of defense. Yet their presence on German soil also fueled controversy, with concerns over political control, the risk of accidental escalation, and the devastating consequences of a potential nuclear exchange. With the INF Treaty and the eventual end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, these weapons were suddenly withdrawn and then permanently decommissioned, fading into obscurity as a relic of a highly dangerous era. As the new US Government of President Donald Trump begins to disengage politically and militarily from the defence of Western Europe in 2025; and The Russian Federal Military begins the process of re-arming and modernisation of its military for future conflict, after learning lessons from the Ukraine War, it is perhaps time to re-examine the history of British and NATO Tactical Nuclear weapons which were all decommissioned under direction of US President George Bush Snr in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This documentary will cover: The origins and purpose, minecraft of Project E and Britain’s role in NATO’s nuclear strategy. The deployment of nuclear artillery and missile systems in West Germany. The real-world challenges of handling and operating battlefield nuclear weapons. How these weapons were intended to be used in a full-scale war against the Warsaw Pact. The eventual withdrawal and dismantling of Britain’s tactical nuclear arsenal. With rare footage, in-depth historical analysis, and compelling interviews, this is the untold story of Britain’s Cold War Nuclear Artillery—a forgotten frontline that once held the power to reshape history in an instant.
