NON HARMONIC TONE

One common mistake in music teaching, especially in choral settings, is the idea that every non-chord tone is a passing tone. In fact, passing tones are just one type of non-harmonic tone. Sadly, they are often the only ones mentioned. In my experience, it is rare to hear a choir master explain other non-chord tones beyond passing tones. Non-chord tones include many different types, each with its own function and movement. When we fail to understand them, we sing or perform music mechanically—without fully understanding why certain notes sound tense, expressive, or emotional. In this video, which is Part One of our study on non-chord tones. I use the melody of a hymn to clearly point out where passing tones occur and how they move step by step between chord tones.
