(5 Sep 2019) Prime Minister Boris Johnson's push for the UK to leave the European Union next month with or without a divorce deal has led to a unprecedented political crisis. The Prime Minister's proposals lead to several defeats in Parliament this week, with members of his party voting against the government and even his own brother resigning as minister. In the Prime Minister's own constituency, Uxbridge and Ruislip in west London, opinions appeared deeply divided on each side of the debate. For long-time conservatives, dissent is unfathomable regardless of Johnson's behavior. The constituency voted to the leave the EU in the 2016 referendum 57% to 42%, but as negotiations stalled and the challenges of Brexit became more apparent, recent polls suggest support for Remain has risen significantly. For some conservatives in Uxbridge, the Prime Minister's decision to suspend parliament and expel 21 conservative MPs who voted against the government has shattered their confidence in his ability to find the consensus needed to legislate. Johnson's do or die attitude towards leaving the EU on October 31 is also galvanizing Remain supporters in the constituency. David Keys, from the European Movement, has been gathering hundreds of signatures from constituents for a joint letter warming Boris Johnson that he will lose their support in the next election over his decision to suspend Parliament and for pushing a no-deal Brexit. Johnson, who won his seat with a comfortable margin of 10,000 votes in 2015 saw that halved to around 5,000 votes in the 2017 general election.
