Locally organised by Australian charitable social enterprise, People For Nature and running in parallel to the UN COP30 summit in Brazil, AlterCOP 30 Australia offered a platform for inclusive, locally grounded conversations on climate change, biodiversity, sustainable cities, health, and community resilience, fostering hope, connection and tangible pathways to action. 🌍 This recording is from Day 2 of AlterCOP30 Australia in Meanjin (Brisbane). This afternoon session was enabled by the Working Group Sustainable Cities and elegantly led by the wonderful Sarah Woolmington from Impact Dragonfly. Waste as a Resource: Designing Out Disposability (Panel + Q&A) What if waste wasn’t the end of the story, but the start of something new? This session explored how design, business innovation, and policy can work together to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Through a multi-perspective discussion, we unpacked practical strategies for waste reduction and examined how cities, businesses, and communities can embrace circular thinking—minimising environmental impact while driving innovation and resilience. Speakers: 🎤 Riya Tailor, Senior Building Physics Engineer at Mott Macdonald 🎤 Louise Tran, Head of OzHarvest Ventures at OzHarvest 🎤 Aron Kurzydlo, Chief Executive Officer at First Nations Carbon ******************** About AlterCOP AlterCOP is a global platform created in 2024 by The Transmutation Principle and The Matcha Initiative, active across 11 countries in 2025. In Australia, People For Nature was appointed as the local organiser of AlterCOP30 Australia, bringing this vision to life by empowering local sustainability action and partnerships — from youth and First Nations leaders to grassroots communities. We believe that COP is a necessary platform for political leaders and global decision-makers to negotiate and agree on policy in the Blue Zone. But as we cannot fly everyone to COP, we also believe in bringing these conversations home — into our countries, regions, and communities. AlterCOP creates a space for everyone to learn about sustainability and for organisations to showcase their climate initiatives, extending the spirit of the Green Zone without accumulating additional carbon emissions. While Australia sent 494 official delegates to COP30, more than 1,400 people registered for AlterCOP 30 Australia events across several states.
