December 2025 was a strong and slightly unhinged month of science fiction reading. In this wrap-up, I talk through everything I read in December — a mix of classic and more contemporary SF, dark cyberpunk, post-apocalypse, space opera, experimental literary science fiction, and one or two genuinely strange books that sit right out on the edges of the genre. Books covered include Richard Calder’s Dead Girls, Mary Gentle’s monumental Ash: A Secret History, Christopher Priest’s quietly devastating The Glamour, Algis Budrys’ existential lunar puzzle Rogue Moon, Tade Thompson’s Nigerian alien-biome novel Rosewater, alongside post-apocalyptic classic Alas, Babylon, the finale of Christopher Ruocchio’s Sun Eater series, and several smaller-scale space opera and speculative titles. As usual, this isn’t a spoiler-heavy breakdown. I’m interested in what these books are doing, how they feel to read, and where they sit in the wider science fiction landscape — including which ones worked for me, which ones didn’t quite land, and why. If you’re looking for thoughtful SF recommendations, curious about older or less obvious titles, or just want to see how a month of serious science fiction reading shakes out, I hope you’ll find something here. Let me know in the comments which of these you’ve read — or which one you think I should pick up next.
