SOT Gillian Anderson - "I haven't done very much theatre at all really so it was absolutely terrifying but it's actually been OK, I haven't died so that's a good sign. The challenge of it has been wonderful and extraordinary and I'm so grateful that I wasn't too scared to run away at some point during the process and have kind of stuck with it." SOT Gillian Anderson - "I enjoy talking in an intimate way in my life about very truthful things and so to show case that kind of behaviour in front of audiences that potentially get embarrassed and uncomfortable with the nature of what we are talking about appeals to me because I like being involved in things that shake people up. Pay attention to this moment, take a look at your life, start doing some self searching and I love the squeamishness that happens in the theatre when people are having to face things that they don't want to face." 9. clip 'What The Night Is For' 10. SOT Roger Allam - "In a sense the play is about what if we'd stayed together or what if we come together now, stuff like that. Everyone can relate to that in some sort of way. The basic what if question, even if it's not about a lover, if I'd taken a different route at some point in my life." 11. SOT Gillian Anderson - "It's also about facing whether or not you are happy in the situation you are in and if you are in a marriage situation or relationship or any kind of life situation where you are miserable, why is it that you continue to keep yourself miserable." 12. clip 'What The Night Is For' STORYLINE: GILLIAN ANDERSON OPENS IN WEST END PLAY GILLIAN ANDERSON will be the latest Hollywood star to take to London's West End stage when her play 'What The Night Is For' opens tomorrow (27NOV02). A stint on London's West End has become almost de rigeur for Hollywood stars looking to revitalise their careers and, with the long running X-files series over, Anderson may well be looking to distance herself from her long association with the conspiracy hunting doctor Special Agent Dana Scully. Other stars who've been on the West End stage recently include Woody Harrelson and Kyle MacLachlan, Nicole Kidman, Kevin Spacey, Macauley Culkin, Kathleen Turner and Madonna - with mixed results for their acting careers. 'What The Night Is For', a two hander by American playwright Michael Weller, is a dark comedy about relationships, infidelity, and modern marriage. The action takes place in a hotel room where Anderson's Melinda Metz meets up with ex-lover Adam Penzuiz, played by Olivier Award winning actor ROGER ALLAM. He wants to renew their affair of ten years earlier and, while she says she doesn't, she can't deny how deeply it affected her. As dinner gives way to sex, the couple begin unravelling their past - and pondering the eternal question "what if" - they had carried on their affair, had got married....etc. Essentially the play is about finding the elusive "one" - How you know who they are, and what happens if you end up with someone who isn't "the one". Anderson is known world wide for the playing Dana Scully in the 'X-Files' and also won critical acclaim for her role in 'The House of Mirth' (2000). But she hadn't done any stage work for years, and was terrified of facing a live audience in 'What The Night Is For'.
