Al Wakrah, fishing and pearling village turned bustling little town, is situated 10 km south of Doha and the beach is approximately 15 km southeast of the town centre. It is a flat, wide and sandy beach starting off golden in colour and getting lighter and softer as you approach the sea. Like Simaisma, the sea is far from the beach, especially at low tide. Once you get to the sea, the shallow water extends for a very long distance making it almost impossible and unsafe to swim. Nevertheless, the walk to the sea is good fun. In fact, you may find it takes longer than planned due to the large pools of seawater in between the sand bars, which in our case proved an irresistible distraction to the little ones! Kiddies will enjoy seeing a crab or two side-stepping quickly in the sand, feeling shoals of tiny fish swimming around their toes and finding seaweed and a myriad of shells to put in their bucket. It is a long walk, but well worth it; the clarity of the water and softness of the sand are second to none. Don’t forget your camera and take some beautiful shots of your family playing in the crystal clear blue water. The main beach has gazebos and umbrellas to offer some shade from the soaring midday temperatures and great on-site facilities such as three terrific playgrounds, a volleyball pitch, a soccer pitch, toilets, showers and BBQ facilities. Don’t come to Al Wakrah for a swim, but rather come for a stroll, a play in the soft sand, a paddle in the sea and a picnic. Also, make the most of the playgrounds, kick a ball, fly a kite and have a barbecue. These are the reasons why Al Wakrah Beach has become one of Qatar’s most popular family beaches. The beach is far from the town of Wakrah—make sure you bring enough supplies of food and drink. It is not very well sign-posted or easy to find the beach from the town centre. Do take note of the directions provided below. If you have water shoes, it would be a good idea to bring them here. It felt rocky and spiky underfoot in places. Weekday afternoons get busy when shade and parking spaces are at a premium. We went on a Saturday morning and found it very relaxing and family-friendly. None of the three playgrounds are shaded, so be sure to bring sun hats and sunscreen. If you go at a busy time, such as a weekend afternoon, take your own shade as you may have trouble finding a spot. Fancy a BBQ on the beach? Bring your own charcoal and grill up at one of the BBQ facilities. After 10 km there is a small gap in the highway for you to take a U-turn—you will see a small sign for Al Wakrah Beach at this point. Heading back towards Al Wakrah, after a few minutes you will see a right turn sign-posted Al Wakrah Beach. Take this right and continue straight on a narrow asphalt/tarmac road. Be careful here and slow down when you see an oncoming vehicle. At the end of the road, turn left onto the dirt track. Follow the track right, parallel to the small Qatar Petroleum site.
