Takdah Orchid Centre (often called the Orchid Garden) is a century-old sanctuary located in the serene hills of Darjeeling, West Bengal. Once considered one of the largest orchid centers in Asia, it is now maintained by the Forest Department of the Government of West Bengal and serves as a research hub for both orchids and medicinal plants. Key Highlights : Species Diversity: The center cultivates and preserves over 200 species of orchids, including rare wild Himalayan varieties. Historical Context: The site dates back to the British era (early 1900s) when Takdah served as a cantonment for British soldiers (specifically the 2nd Battalion). Herbal Garden: Besides orchids, there is a dedicated herbal grove with medicinal plants used for ayurvedic and therapeutic purposes. Landscape: Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet, the garden is surrounded by lush green tea estates like Rangli Rangliot and misty pine forests. Entry Fee: Approximately ₹15 to ₹20 per person. Timings: Usually open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. Best Time to Visit: February to April: Peak blooming season for many orchid species. October to November: Another good time for late autumn blooms and clear mountain views. Note: During the monsoon or winter off-season, you may find fewer flowers in bloom. How to Reach? Location: It is located about 1.5 km from the Takdah market and roughly 28 km (1.5 hours) from Darjeeling town. Proximity: It is a common stop for travelers visiting nearby Tinchuley or Lamahatta (about 30 minutes away). If you are planning a trip, you can also explore: Heritage Bungalows: Stay in or visit old British colonial bungalows. Tea Gardens: Walk through the Rungli Rungliot or Teesta Valley tea estates. Takdah Monastery: A peaceful spot with views of the surrounding valleys. Barbetey Bridge: A historic 100-year-old hanging bridge nearby.
