The Boruma Trio is a musical collaboration that unites the two stylistically contrasting musical traditions of East Clare and North Tipperary. It features fiddler Eileen O' Brien from North Tipperary, accordion player Andrew MacNamara from East Clare and the piano and tin whistle skills of Dr. Geraldine Cotter from Ennis. The Boruma Trio derives its name from Brian Boru High King of Ireland, who was born at the Fort of Kincora, also known as "Béal Boruma." = Eileen O’Brien is from Newtown, Nenagh in Co. Tipperary. She is daughter of the late Paddy O’Brien accordionist and composer. Eileen also composes music. She has recorded solo albums “Newtown Bridge”, “the Fiddler’s Choice” and “Aon le hAon”. She has produced two publications, “The Compositions of Paddy O’Brien” and “The Definitive Collection of the Music of Paddy O’Brien”. Eileen learned her music from her father Paddy and grandfather Dinny. Eileen is a teacher at the I.W.A.M.D, University of Limerick. Eileen also played with a number of bands over the years including “The Ormond Ceili Band”, “Duharra” and “The Maineastreach Ceili Band” = Andrew McNamara is from Tulla, Co. Clare. He learned a lot of his music from non-commercial recordings of local musicians made by his father in the early 70’s. He has recorded solo albums “The Dawn” and “No Compromise”. Andrew has also recorded with his sister Mary MacNamara (Concertina) on the album “Open Hearth”, with Orla Harrington and Jim Higgins on “Flagstone Memories”. He was a founding member of the group Skylark and recorded two albums with them before forming his own band called ‘The Lahawns’ and recorded two further albums with them ,‘Live at Lena’s’ and ‘Live at Winkles’. He has also recorded with “The Tulla Ceili Band”. = Dr. Geraldine Cotter is from Ennis, Co. Clare. She is one of the most highly respected accompanists of her generation. In the 70’s she studied music in UCC. Her Irish music lecturer at the time was Micheál Ó Súilleabháin. She has recorded with Peadar O’Loughlin, Paddy Canny, Maeve Donnelly, Eamon Cotter, Shaskeen and many more. Her solo album “Piano +” was received to great acclaim. She has published two tutors for both tin-whistle and piano, in 1983 ‘Traditional Irish Tin Whistle Tutor’ (“Rogha”) and in 1995 she wrote the first tutor for traditional Irish piano “Seinn an Piano”. She also contributed to ‘The Companion to Irish Traditional Music’ edited by Fintan Vallely and published by Cork University Press 1999. She taught music as a secondary teacher for over 25 years and examined for the Department of Education and Science for many years. She taught in the University of Limerick for over ten years and is a lecturer on music education in Mary Immaculate College Limerick. She has taught at the Willie Clancy Summer School, Blas Summer School which is run by the Irish World Music Centre at the University of Limerick, Tocane Irish Music Festival, Rhine Valley Irish Association Whit weekend festival, Aonach Paddy O Brien, Gaelic Roots in Boston College.
