S. Bach, "Polka" from Cantata No. 78 Cassette booklet notes: About the Instrument: The Concert accordion is essentially a portable reed organ. Like the Regal and Harmonium, the sound is produced by blowing wind through metal reeds. However the accordion has a unique feature in the bellows, which have an amazingly high degree of control. This permits a great range of dynamics and special effects--from whispering pianissimos to blasting sforzandos, from delicate tremolos to rapid bellow shakes. The Concert Accordion also has two independent manuals, with a combined range of seven octaves. The left-hand manual (composed of 140 buttons) has a "Free Bass Register" which allows the instrument to play single note melodies of five octaves, in addition to the traditional bass/chord "ooh-pah" accordion action. This innovation permits the artist to perform polyphonic pieces with both hands. Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Alban Berg, Paul Hindemith, Sergei Prokofiev, and Lukas Foss are some composers who have written music for the instrument. About the Artist: Henry Doktorski began playing the accordion at seven years of age and graduated "summa cum laude" from college with a major in Piano Performance. He continued graduate studies at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N. J., and won first place at the American Accordion Musicological Society's 1990 Virtuoso Solo Competition. He is equally proficient in solo recitals, in chamber music concerts, and as a guest performer with symphony orchestras and choruses. He is also the director of the City of God Accordion Ensemble which recently won first prize trophies in three major competitions in 1990: the American Accordionist's Association competition, the American Accordion Musicological Society competition, and the International Accordion Teacher's Guild competition.
