n medieval India, many communities lived outside the main agrarian society and were known as tribes. These tribal groups lived in forests, hills, deserts and remote areas, and depended on hunting, gathering, shifting cultivation, pastoralism and small-scale farming for their livelihood. They followed their own customs, traditions and leaders, and were usually organised around kinship ties rather than strict social hierarchies like the caste system. Tribal people were generally self-sufficient and moved from place to place according to seasonal needs. Over time, with the expansion of kingdoms and settled agriculture, the lives of tribal communities slowly began to change through contact with settled societies.
