In the Women in Science series, STARS EU demonstrates its commitment to the inclusive participation of women in scientific and technological fields. From 11 February (International Day of Women and Girls in Science) to 8 March (International Women's Day), we will share nine individual video portraits, each dedicated to a female researcher from one of the universities that make up the STARS EU alliance, whose work embodies the spirit of these international commemorations. Whether in cutting-edge technologies, public policy, social analysis or sustainable solutions, these scientists demonstrate the impact and potential of women in science. Zohre Kurt is professor of Life Sciences & Renewable Energy affiliated to Entrance - Centre of Expertise Energy at the Hanze University of Applied Scieces. She leads innovative research projects into the production of renewable molecules using chemical and biological processes. Developing an engaging curriculum and providing mentorship to students/researchers are important to her. She also tries to foster strong interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and with external partners to encourage impactful research focused on sustainability. She received her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (US). She worked as a researcher at Florida State University in Panama City (Florida, USA) and as an assistant professor at Middle East Technical University in Ankara (Turkey). She has also worked as a consultant for companies in industry. In 2022, she was appointed associate professor. “I am an Environmental and Chemical Engineer with a double masters and a PhD focusing on discovering novel enzymes of microbes. This educational background gave me enough tools to apply them to energy research and currently my group is focusing on valorization biogas and resource recovery from wastewater and digestate”, says the expert.
