My original plan was to walk the rugged shoreline between Yui and the neighboring town of Okitsu. But several false starts along the coast meant that the hike never quite unfolded the way I imagined. Instead of the seaside trek I planned, the day turned into something else entirely. I wandered the narrow streets, alleys, and walkways of Yui—an old town layered with the textures of time. Weathered houses leaned quietly along the lanes, many of them abandoned akiya, while old storefronts and forgotten buildings hinted at the long life of the community. The walk became tactile and exploratory, full of unexpected discoveries tucked into corners and side paths. In the process I found myself thinking about the idea of “finding out”—how life often reveals itself not through carefully executed plans, but through wandering, adjusting, and paying attention. At nearly sixty-two, retired and still finding my way, this became a hike not along the coast, but through the landscape of the present moment.
