Hole In The Wall Canyon - Newnes Plateau - Blue Mountains Canyoning - 4K

Hole In The Wall Canyon is one of the most popular and accessible canyons out on the Newnes Plateau, it has well-defined entry and exit tracks, making it an easy one to get in and out of. It is simply one of the most stunning and unique canyons out here, so much jam-packed into the two sections. Being popular, increases the chances of having multiple parties going through at once, we were lucky, we saw nobody the whole day we were out doing this one. It is a long walk in and out, nearly 6kms to the creek start and around 7kms for the exit, so, it can make for quite a long day if you move at an average pace, it was a long day for us with filming and prior injuries slowing us down somewhat. Park at the end of Waratah Ridge Road in the car park and walk from there along the original fire trail to start with. When you get to the old car park, which is now a campsite, take the track on the left of the campsite and follow that single track. There are 5 abseils of varying lengths, with the longest around 15mtrs which was just awesome. So, a 40mtr rope was plenty, a 30mtr might do at a pinch. The upper section of the canyon is a good introduction for what was about to come in the lower section, just when walking on the sandy creek bed, watch out for liquid sand patches, they can grab you by surprise. The lower section is where the best stuff is, the abseils, the tunnel swim, glow works, dark, twisting narrow sections, just amazing! Then, after abseil 5, not long after you pass through the "Hole In The Wall" that the canyon gets its name from and into the Bungleboori (Dingo Creek if you must), then, a left turn and a long swim and mixed creek walking to get to the "Big Bend" where the exit is. Before you round the nose of the Big bend, there is what looks like an exit scramble, it is a false exit, you need to do one last swim around the nose and the true exit gully will reveal itself.
