In this video I share one of my favourite garden tricks — how I keep my kale plants alive for years instead of just one season. My Cavolo Nero / Nero di Toscana kale growing in the polytunnel is now around 3–4 years old, and I show the simple method I use to stop it from forming flower heads so it keeps producing leaves. By removing developing flower shoots early and managing the plant properly, kale can behave more like a short-lived perennial, giving harvests year after year instead of just one season. I explain what to look for when kale starts trying to bolt and how I intervene to keep the plant productive. Alongside the kale update, I also get on with some early spring jobs in the garden: • Sowing carrots • Sowing spinach • Planting potatoes • A quick update on how my recently sown seeds are germinating If you're gardening in the UK or a similar climate, these small seasonal tasks — and learning how to extend the life of plants like kale — can really improve productivity in your garden. 🌱 In this video: • How I keep kale alive for 3–4 years • Stopping kale from forming flower/seed heads • Growing Cavolo Nero (Nero di Toscana kale) as a perennial • Sowing carrots and spinach • Planting potatoes • Seed germination update If you enjoy practical UK gardening tips, polytunnel growing, and growing your own food, consider subscribing and following along through the growing season. #gardening #ukgardening #growyourownfood #kale #cavolonero #polytunnel #perennialvegetables #springgardening
