Having solid preflop fundamentals at the poker table in cash games or poker tournaments is essential, as it will help dictate all future action on the flop, turn, and river. One of the most important things to understand to stop playing preflop wrong is knowing the difference between a polar and a linear strategy, and the correct time to implement them. Luckily, Jonathan Little is here to teach you about polarized and linear preflop 3-betting strategies, and how they can be used to help you crush your next poker game. If a 3-betting range is polarized, it means that you have 3-bet with the hands that are at the top of your 3-betting range, such as pocket aces, pocket kings, and big slick. To balance these value hands, you also 3-bet with hands that are not quite at the bottom end of your preflop calling range, these will often be hands such as low suited kings, or hands such as weak suited broadway hands. Having a polarized 3-betting strategy preflop allows you to make easier decisions when your opponents 4-bet, as you can continue with the strongest part of your range and happily fold the other part of your range. A linear preflop 3-betting range consists of just your best hands, which include your premiums, as well as hands that are just outside the range of hands that 3-bet preflop for value, such as king-queen suited, king-jack suited. All other hands that you want to see a flop with continue in the form of a call. Having a linear 3-betting preflop strategy works best against players who generally do not 4-bet often enough preflop, as you will usually get heads up against a weaker opponent with a hand that plays very well postflop.
