Syria: A Rare Glimpse into Al-Hol Camp

Around 53,000 people—the majority of them women and children—live in Al-Hol camp in northeast Syria. Once a humanitarian camp for people displaced by conflicts in Syria and Iraq, Al-Hol has become more like a detention center for people with perceived affiliations with the Islamic State. People of more than 60 nationalities are held here, their home countries having failed to protect or find long-term solutions for them. "I see it as more of an outdoor prison,” said Ayla, a medical doctor who worked with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Al-Hol camp more than a year ago. She used her visual art skills to help process some of the disturbing things she was seeing—violence, intimidation, and people living in miserable conditions behind barbed wire fences. Outsiders are rarely allowed access to the camp and video and photos are not permitted, so Ayla's drawings offer a rare inside look. “Being able to produce this illustration felt a bit like letting go of certain things,” she said.
