La filature et le tissage du coton / Spinning and weaving cotton (Rouen, 1920)

Intended as educational films, these two shorts take you through the main steps of cotton production in the early part of the twentieth century. Produced for the Pathé Baby system, they rely heavily on intertitles and still frames, but still manage to reflect the way the industry was, just out of the range of human memory. The emphasis is technical, but you can get something of the feel of mill work, and feel something of the pride that what now seems a fairly primitive industry awaked around a century ago. Conçus comme deux films d’instruction, ces deux court-métrages montrent les principaux processus de l’industrie du coton au commencement du 20e siècle. Produits pour le système Pathé-Baby, ils se servent beaucoup d’intertitres et de vues fixes, mais ils parviennent néanmoins à réfléchir les conditions dans l’industrie à une époque maintenant non accessible par la mémoire humaine. Le focus est sur la technologie, mais il est possible de sentir un peu les sensations du travail dans une fabrique, et aussi la fierté qu’on sentait au sujet d’une industrie qui maintenant semble presque primitive.
