It had rained back and forth for a few days so it was really wet outside. Preparations under such conditions are crucial. I gathered material from the kindling and gradually up to arm thick wood. In bad weather you often need more kindling than usually. For tinder, I used birch bark. It burns even when it rains, just wipe off water before use. I gathered twigs and branches from spruce. Death, standing wood is by far the best source of finding dry wood in bad weather. They remain dry inside for a long time because they stand vertically. The water does not penetrate the wood as easily. Here I chopped down a dead birch. After the fire was lit, I put on more fuel than I usually do on top of it to dry out. I chopped upp the birch in thinner peices so it would burn more easily. The wind can be of much help to get the fire going when the material is damp. Questions and suggestions are welcome.
