However, take for example speeches in the streets, or other campaign speeches. Photos and video of these can be disseminated and that means we can reach people who weren't actually there. In that sense, I think there will be some kind of an effect." Saitama Prefecture - 4 July 2013 9. Wide of people in street near Urawa station 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeffrey Kingston, Director of Asian Studies at Temple University: "The problem is a lot of politicians are not adept at social media and they've had some seminars and I'm sure their assistants will help. I don't think it's going to be much of a game changer. I think that the problem will be information overload, and voters won't know what's the dross and what's valuable information and so, in a sense, I think it will add to the frustration of voters. And, typically in the internet, it's a chance for the worst characteristics of people to come out." Tokyo - 2 July 2013 14. Wide of Abe and Sandberg STORYLINE: Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic party began campaigning for parliamentary elections on Thursday - with a particular emphasis on using technology as a campaign tool. Takuya Hirai, head of the LDP's internet election strategy team, says that though the party's campaigns will be conducted as normal, campaigners will gather as much media of events as they can in order to spread their message online. "It (the campaign strategy) will be the same as it has been," Hirai told the Associated Press. "However, take for example speeches in the streets, or other campaign speeches. Photos and video of these can be disseminated and that means we can reach people who weren't actually there. In that sense, I think there will be some kind of an effect." Some potential voters in Tokyo sounded positive about the strategy on Thursday, with one man describing the online initiative as "appropriate for the times". But others worry that the new emphasis on social media may lead to the dissemination of false rumours. Jeffrey Kingston, Director of Asian Studies at Temple University, is also sceptical. "I think that the problem will be information overload, and voters won't know what's the dross and what's valuable information," he said.
