On December 7, 1941, the battleship USS Arizona exploded during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The bomb penetrated the ship’s forward magazine and triggered one of the most catastrophic explosions in naval history. In seconds, more than 1,100 sailors were killed. The ship was burning. The harbor was covered in oil and fire. And the men trapped aboard the Arizona had almost no way out. But one sailor was still alive. Donald Stratton was nineteen years old when the explosion tore the battleship apart. He was trapped high above the deck with severe burns across most of his body. The ladders were gone. The deck below was burning. The water was on fire. Then a rope was thrown from the nearby repair ship USS Vestal. Stratton crossed that rope hand over hand, above burning oil, with badly burned hands and almost no strength left. He survived. This video tells the story of the USS Arizona explosion, the destruction of Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row, and the young sailor who escaped a burning battleship when almost everyone around him died. Donald Stratton carried the memory of Pearl Harbor for the rest of his life. #PearlHarbor #USSAZONA #WWII
