In this lecture we think about the various kinds of burial practices found in the Roman world, focusing in particular on: (i) the use of columbaria; (ii) the different objects that were stored in the niches of columbaria, including cinerary urns and marble busts; (ii) the kind of people whose remains were stored in columbaria; (iii) the extent to which cinerary urns were decorated; (iv) the use of tombstones; (v) the use of coffins – either wooden (which tend not to survive in the archaeological record) or stone (also known as sarcophagi); and (vi) the kinds of decoration found on sarcophagi, e.g. scenes from myth, battle scenes, scenes from everyday life, etc. -- This lecture is part of a larger course exploring Roman death and burial practices: massolit.io/courses/roman-death-and-burial?source=yt – MASSOLIT works with university academics to produce short video lectures in the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences. It is available to schools and colleges on an institutional license as well as via private subscription: massolit.io/?source=yt
