Inaugural Ceremony of the North Zone All India Inter-University Kabaddi Tournament (Women’s Category) 2025 held at Khree Sulktan Cho Stadium Kargil Lt. Governor reiterates commitment to making Ladakh a hub of education and Sports Kargil, 24 Oct. 2025: The inaugural ceremony of the North Zone All India Inter-University Kabaddi Tournament (Women’s Category) 2025 organized by the University of Ladakh commenced today with a ceremonially rich inaugural event at Khree Sultan Cho Stadium, Kargil. The four-day championship, featuring 48 participating universities, marks a landmark moment in the University’s sports calendar and represents the region’s expanding footprint in national-level athletic engagement. The inauguration began with the rendition of the National Anthem by students of PM Shri High School Minjee, setting a patriotic and solemn tone for the proceedings. The ceremonial presentation of traditional khataks and mementos to the dignitaries — Hon’ble Lt. Governor and Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta; Hon’ble Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil, Shri (Dr.) Mohammad Jaffar Akhone; and Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Shri Mohammad Hanifa Jan — was carried out by Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, in accordance with Ladakhi custom. A flag march ceremony, executed by contingents of the participating universities, symbolized inter-university solidarity and athletic fraternity, followed by the Oath Ceremony, wherein athletes pledged adherence to the principles of integrity, fair play, and sportsmanship. Delivering the Welcome Address, Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, underscored the strategic role of sports in the higher education ecosystem, noting that many national and Olympic-level athletes trace their origins to the university sports framework. He announced initiatives for year-round coaching for competitive examinations, research scholarships for Ph.D. scholars, and highlighted the surge in student enrollment at the University of Ladakh as a marker of its academic credibility. He reiterated the University’s vision of promoting peace, harmony, and holistic development, urging teams to engage with fairness and dignity. A culturally vibrant Jabro Dance performance by students of the University of Ladakh provided a visual interlude celebrating local heritage and tradition. In his address, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Shri Mohammad Hanifa Jan, hailed the tournament as a significant milestone for the University and the Union Territory, emphasizing that Kabaddi, as a sport, reflects the cultural and social connectedness to the soil. He urged teams to carry forward the cultural and aesthetic ethos of Kargil to their home states and appreciated the University’s role in fostering inclusivity through sports. He also underscored the importance of sports reservations in encouraging regional participation and advised all players to uphold the ethos of sportsmanship. A traditional Shina Dance performance by the University’s students followed, encapsulating the rich multicultural identity of Ladakh. Hon’ble CEC, LAHDC Kargil, Shri (Dr.) Mohammad Jaffar Akhone, termed the event as a historic achievement for the people of Kargil, being the first-ever tournament of this magnitude hosted in the district. He lauded the University administration’s organizational excellence and welcomed the teams as cultural ambassadors of Kargil. Commending Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha’s academic vision, he proposed the establishment of an Agricultural University in Kargil, appealing to the Hon’ble governor of UT Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta of and University administration for its consideration. On the occasion, Mr. Mohammad Jaweed, Physical Training Instructor, University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus, was felicitated by the Hon’ble Lt. Governor for his selection as Coach for the Indian National Team (Volleyball - Men), a moment that drew applause from the audience. Delivering his address, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, lauded the University’s progressive vision and proactive role in advancing sports infrastructure, academic innovation, and institutional collaboration across the Union Territory. He observed that the successful participation of 48 universities in a single zonal tournament stands as a testament to the University’s expanding organizational competence and its growing national footprint. Emphasizing that sports nurture discipline, teamwork, and resilience, he asserted that such events are vital instruments for youth empowerment and regional integration. The Hon’ble Lt. Governor further commended the Kargil Campus for the successful conduct of the recent Convocation, and appreciated the dedication of the non-teaching staff in ensuring operational excellence across university activities.
