Are you trying break free of realistic painting so you can create more painterly landscapes? In this video, I walk you through creating soft, painterly landscapes in oil, with a focus on values, rendering, and a limited palette, to help you create paintings that feel fresh and alive. I'll also teach you, step by step, how I created this painting of a train in winter through a tutorial timelapse. Drawing from the work of Richard Schmid, author of Alla Prima II, we'll cover brushwork, working with a reference photo, and much much more. This video was shot in 4K, so crank up the resolution! I used to aim for photorealism with my landscape paintings, but lately I've shifted into a softer, more painterly look with my work. I also used to think that realism meant making my paintings look like photos, but I've learned through experience that it takes true skill to use fewer strokes and allow the viewer's imagination to participate. I called the final painting "Spirit of the North," as it features an Ontario Northland Train, and represents Northern Ontarians: determined, steadfast, and tough as iron. I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to Mike Robin for allowing me to use his photograph of an ONR train as a reference.
