The Color of Sci-Fi is a series celebrating and uplifting the genre of Sci-Fi and the people of color who create and enjoy it. The series includes art exhibitions, author talks, and panel discussions on the power and importance of representation in science fiction and STEM fields and its impact on our city and society. The inaugural Color of Sci-Fi events occurred in October - November of 2023 at Detroit Public Library. This year (2024), DMJ Studio is curating an all-new exhibit celebrating people of color in science fiction. The exhibit focuses on the Star Trek characters Captain Benjamin Sisko and Lt. Uhura. These two enduring characters have made major changes in the world of science fiction and have become role models and inspiration to black and brown people. Featuring artists April Shipp, Justin Perry, Kimberly Givens, Tia Nichols , Mandisa Smith, Anthea Calhoun, Miriam Uhura, Molouk Harp, and works by members of the DMJStudio team, the "Color of Sci-Fi" is on view in the DPL Galleria from November 9, 2024 - January 31, 2025. To kick-off the new exhibit, there was an Author Discussion at the Main Library (5201 Woodward) on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with authors Steven Barnes and Derek Tyler Attico. Bestselling author Steven Barnes has written over 30 novels in the genres of science fiction, horror and suspense. His writing credits also include television shows such as The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and Stargate SG-1. Derek Tyler Attico is an author, essayist and award-winning photographer. His most recent book is the critically acclaimed The Autobiography of Benjamin Sisko.
