Casting is often overlooked in Euro nymphing and tight line tactics, but it’s more important than almost any other part of your presentation. The right cast for the right rig and conditions is often the difference between catching fifty fish or catching five. Light flies are the hardest to cast on a tight line system because they don’t have enough mass to easily load the rod. Many anglers stick with heavier nymphs just so they can cast—but then struggle with constantly hanging up on the bottom. If you want to fish lighter bugs successfully, you need to learn the Water Load Cast (sometimes called the Frisbee Cast, as my friend Josh Miller explains in his book). The Water Load Cast uses the resistance of your fly and leader on the water, in addition to their weight, to load the rod. It’s the go-to cast for delivering light flies in Euro nymphing, but I also use it—and variations of it—for many rigs to handle all sorts of tricky river situations. It’s by far the most useful cast in tight line fly fishing. In this video, I’ll break down the fundamental casting physics behind weighted flies so you can apply these concepts beyond just the water load cast. With some practice, this technique will help you take your Euro nymphing game to the next level. 👉 Want to go deeper?
