If you or someone you know has a mobility impairment with a wheelchair or scooter that is too heavy to lift into the car by yourself, and you wish you could find a lightweight electric wheelchair lift that would solve this problem, then we see our new Freedom wheelchair lift becoming a broad solution that will help cross the barriers to mobility idependence for thousands of individuals around the globe, and this is why. If you look around carefully while going about your day you will quickly realise that we have an ever growing epidemic of mobility impaired individuals silently suffering all around us, who through no fault of their own have come to rely on mobility aids just to take care of the basics like buying food and medicines, going to doctor's appointments and doing their jobs. We're talking about thousands of ageing parents and grandparents who contributed so much to our own lives and yet, who due to the ravages of time and fate now are forced to live out empty joyless lives stuck between four walls in cramped apartments and lonely nursing home TV rooms - devoid of any interaction and joy with faraway loved ones and friends, and the fact is that for most of these people who dont have a good friend or community caregiver who can take them out occasionally, the only method many of these individuals have for getting out is by using their imagination. For the last four years we've been marketing and developing the new upcoming genre of lightweight folding electric wheelchair, and at least these new lightweight Lithium battery mobility aids are a giant leap forward towards portable mobility. They are much easier to lift into a car than the heavy old electric ones, but technology still has a long way to go before we have true portable mobility aids. One of the most pressing needs our clients have asked for is an affordable portable lift that will help them to easily lift their wheelchairs and mobility scooters into the back of their car. During this last years we've steadily been working on coming up with a portable lift that would fit the bill. The challenge may look easy but believe me it is not. We have tried sliding trays that could be adjusted for different car boots, and booms that can be affixed to the chassis of the car and many other variants but they all fell short. In the end we knew we needed an independent handheld motorised lift as this would eliminate the need for customisation for different vehicle types. We then thought of using electric linear actuators, and could not find any long enough, strong enough or fast enough, but most importantly strong enough not only to lift upto KG, but also to withstand the bending force of lifting the weight of a folding electric wheelchair without snapping it like a twig. Our solution was to encase the linear actuator with high tensile strength telescoping tubes that would absorb the bending force. This worked just fine, but then we discovered a new problem. When lifting the wheelchair, the slack between the wheelchair and boom in the lifting cable causes the boom to always lift too high up past the edge of the open trunk or boot lid, making it impossible to wheel the lift in under the car so as to properly position the wheelchair for lowering it accurately into the boot or trunk. We finally overcame this by designing a very compact and strong hand winch that sports and incredibly easy to use magnetic ratchet and pawl which can be effortlessly disengaged for lowering the wheelchair into the car. This method of manually taking up the slack by means of the little hand winch to overcome the overextending boom was another inventive step in our patent pending lift. We have tested our prototype on just about every vehicle type, and this mini hand winch definitely solves the problem, and not only that, for those who still have normal upperbody functions it provides for a very affordable manual handcrank model capable of lifting weights up to kg. Furthermore we have two electric models, the first being the standard electric freedom lift for folding electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters weighing up to kg, and then the "Brutus" model capable of lifting the old-style heavier models weighing up to kg.
