There is SO much variety in combination on/off road motorcycle riding gear out there. From full on dirt bike/no pavement setups to the gear you need to ride multiple days on the interstate, it’s pretty easy to get overwhelmed by choice. Whether you're tackling singletrack deep in the backcountry or just cruising the highway looking for an awesome campground, our gear to dual sport and adv riding gear will help you determine what setup makes the most sense for you and the type of off road motorcycle riding you do. There are so many off road motorcycling gear questions to answer? Hard vs soft motorcycle armor? Jacket vs Jersey? MX boots vs ADV boots? What kind of gloves to wear? What kind of motorcycle helmet should I get? Does it even matter? ADV Gear for Mostly Highway Pavement is flat, fast, and hard…So it stands to reason that you’re going to look more at gear with soft armor, high abrasion resistance, and less of an emphasis on airflow. Most of the motorcycle riding gear out there is designed with this type of riding in mind. High abrasion resistance throughout because if you crash at speed on a flat surface you are going to slide. Special emphasis (and usually higher abrasion resistance) on the parts of the body that hit the ground (elbows, shoulders, knees, butt). Soft armor is present in these same areas for the same reason. ADV Gear for Mostly Dirt: Off pavement riding generally takes place on softer (or at least mixed) surfaces that are uneven and require riding at a lower speed (or at least you should be riding at a lower speed). Therefore impact protection and air flow are priorities. Crashing on an uneven surface hurts. You need hard armor to spread out narrow impacts to a wider area on the body and prevent penetration. Softer surfaces don’t create as much abrasion because dirt, gravel, mud, sand, etc…will move beneath you when you hit and the rocky surfaces you encounter are not going to be flat enough to slide along in most cases. Worst case scenario is crashing on an uneven surface and coming to an immediate and abrupt stop. Hard armor is best for this.
