Residents of the Complexo do Alemao, in Rio de Janeiro, carried dozens of bodies to a public square on Wednesday after the deadliest police operation in the history of the state called Operation Contention, which, according to authorities, was aimed at the drug trafficking gang Comando Vermelho and left a toll of 132 dead, including four officers. On 29 October, relatives of those killed embraced the bodies of the deceased, which were laid out on the ground, after being found in the forest between the Penha and Alemao favela complexes, where the police action took place. "This massacre is only different from the point of view of its extent, the number of people killed. But it is not different from the point of view of criminal practice, of public security policy, of the way the State usually treats the poor community. Therefore, it is not the first massacre," commented a Rio resident. The police operation carried out on Tuesday sought to execute 100 arrest warrants against members of Comando Vermelho. According to authorities, the alleged criminals responded with gunfire and explosives. With the support of 2,500 officers and dozens of armoured vehicles, the security forces conducted raids that resulted in the arrest of 81 suspects. In addition, 93 rifles and more than half a tonne of drugs were seized, according to the regional government. Meanwhile residents also ventured into the dense forests of Vacaria, in the Serra da Misericordia area where they claimed to have discovered dozens more bodies. Footage shows community members entering the forest, uncovering blood-stained clothing, bullet casings, and trees riddled with bullet holes. “It was a massacre with several premeditated killings, those where there is intent to kill,” alleged Alex Castro, a resident of Morro do Alemao. According to eyewitnesses, dozens of corpses were found scattered across the wooded areas between Alemao and Penha. Residents reportedly collected more than 50 bodies, placing them in San Lucas Plaza, within the Penha Complex, so that families could attempt to identify their relatives. “The State knows how to enter, knows how to make us cry, because we are mothers,” said Neusa, another local resident. At least 50 people have been identified, while community groups estimate that more than 100 additional bodies could still be hidden within the forest. Witnesses claimed many of the men appeared unarmed and described it as a 'massacre'. In total, 132 people have been reported dead, including four police officers, in one of the deadliest security operations in Rio’s history, targeting drug gangs. The Brazilian government pledged a full review of the operation’s conduct and promised measures to ensure transparency in future public security actions.
