You Are Peter and on THIS ROCK I Will Build My Church

Today's Gospel Reading is Mt 16:13-20 Jesus founds His Church on Peter, giving him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. With these keys comes the authority to "bind and loose", understood in its many capacities. Why does Jesus give this power to Peter? Because Peter is FIRST to acknowledge Jesus as Lord. His authority is because of his faith! It is Peter who articulates on behalf of the twelve apostles who Jesus is. What does this have to do with today? We know, as Catholics, that the keys given to Peter, and the ability to bind and loose given to all the apostles, extend throughout time via apostolic succession. In other words, the Bishops of the Church are TRULY the successors of the Apostles, having received their authority of prior generations of Bishops all the way back to Peter and the other eleven. We know where the authority Jesus bestowed on Peter is, and so we can have assurance, by remaining in line with the Pope and the Catholic Church, that we are in line with the Truth, Christ Himself.
