The most recent trip that I made to the Coastal Bend, this marked the last time that I had driven over the Old Harbor Bridge (Old Cantilever Bridge). On what reports that I am hearing the new bridge is supposed to be opening to traffic later in the Spring of 2025. It appears that everything is still on track. On a You Tube video of the documentary on Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge. This also tells the story about the Old Bascule Bridge (The Old Draw Bridge) that opened to traffic in the mid 1920’s. During a 24-hour period the crews had to open the bridge 30 times a day. And caused a whole lot of traffic disruptions in the process. The Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge opened to traffic on October 23, 1959. When this event had taken place, this marked the beginning when the Texas Department of Transportation started phasing out a lot of the old “Draw Bridges” and “Swing Bridges" on their busiest highways and Right-Of-Ways across the State of Texas because a whole lot of these bridges were beginning to get very dangerous due to a whole lot of gridlocks in these areas. Just to cause more insult-and-injury to the situation, the Texas Department of Transportation would close these bridges in the event when repairs needed to be done when they would get hit by these large vessels.
