A full evening in Falls Church City — from student service to a landmark budget vote. The meeting opened with a moving spotlight on Give Day at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, where more than 200 students gave up their MLK Day holiday to pack over 20,000 meals for families displaced by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. Two Give Day Ambassadors — Thomas Friar and Nawaal Raheemson — addressed the board directly, sharing what the experience meant to them. The board then unanimously approved the FY 2026-27 Advertised Budget — a $71,591,629 operating fund budget that reflects months of careful collaboration between the superintendent's team, the school board, and city government partners. COO Alicia Prince and Superintendent Dr. Terry Dade walked through the journey from December to March — a process defined by fiscal discipline, tough tradeoffs, and a shared commitment to protecting staff and student services in uncertain times. Also on the agenda: Public Comment, policy updates, including a new student-athlete cardiac arrest policy; first readings on caps and gowns and class gift policies being moved from board to operational oversight; and a second reading of the non-school employment policy. Dr. Dade's superintendent report highlighted the launch of the WEB (Wellness, Equity & Belonging) Survey, strong winter sports performances — including a state championship wrestler, a state runner-up in indoor track, and a 19-3 girls basketball season — and upcoming IB exhibitions at Oak Street and Meridian. The board also got an update on the AI Ad Hoc Committee, with a community town hall scheduled for April 18th and a board work session on April 28th.
