The 23rd Oriah, a popular festival of the Wancho community, was celebrated with traditional fervour at the TCL Ground in Senki View here on Monday. The festival is also being observed in other parts of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly in Longding district, the homeland of the Wancho tribe. Minister for Panchayati Raj, Rural Development and Transport Ojing Tasing attended the programme as the chief guest. MLA Laisam Simai was also present. Addressing the gathering, Tasing said the state’s diverse tribal festivals, largely linked to agricultural cycles and prayers for a good harvest, reflect the spirit of unity in diversity. He said such occasions provide a platform to showcase cultural heritage through traditional dances, songs and rituals. Describing the Wancho community as culturally vibrant, he urged people to preserve their traditions while embracing development, adding that progress and heritage must go hand in hand. Celebrated annually at the onset of spring, Oriah is traditionally observed over several days in the Patkai hill region of Longding district, with prayers for prosperity, good harvest and community wellbeing.
