Liverpool Castle once stood in the city centre but can now be found more than 30 miles away. The original castle, constructed in the 13th century, was found on land that is now occupied by Derby Square and Liverpool Crown Court, at the end of Castle Street. Said to have been built atop a plateau to protect a new port on Lord Street, the castle stood until the 18th century. It was said to have fallen into an advanced state of decay by the 16th century and its final ruins were removed in 1726. The site was then occupied by a church, which was then knocked down in the late 19th century and replaced with the Victoria Monument. The monument on Derby Square contains a plaque which says: "On this site formerly stood the Castle of Liverpool". That is not the only nod to it, as the brutalist Crown Court building was designed to mimic the castle. Nowadays, if you want to see Liverpool Castle, you have to travel to Lancashire. A scale replica of the castle can be found in Lever Park in Rivington, near Chorley. #liverpoolecho #liverpoolnews #castle Subscribe: https://bit.ly/38qFsLg Website: https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/ Facebook: / theliverpoolecho Twitter: / livechonews Instagram: / liverpoolecho TikTok: / liverpoolecho Do you have a great video, picture or story?
