Thermal imaging of high-intensity energetic events presents a unique set of challenges due to the extreme and dynamic conditions characteristic of these environments. Considerations which must be addressed within an experimental imaging plan often include rapid temperature fluctuations, intense and highly varied infrared radiation profiles, and the presence of obscurants and hazards such as smoke, dust, and debris, among others. High-Speed Infrared (IR) cameras, while capable of capturing thermal phenomena at high temporal resolutions, must contend with these external issues, as well as those related to their own hardware, such as sensor saturation, dynamic range limitations, and the need for precise synchronization with the transient nature of blast events. Thanks to Joe Carrock, our Field Application Engineer, take a look at these challenges, as well as available solutions which can enhance the fidelity and utility of thermal imaging in energetics diagnostics.
