Episode 177: The Myth of Instant College Friends 👇 Don’t forget to: 👍 Like this episode 🔔 Subscribe for real talk about adult friendship College is supposed to be the easiest place to make friends—so why does it feel so hard for so many students? As students come home between semesters, I hear from a lot of worried parents whose kids haven’t “found their people” yet. And I also hear from students who are convinced that everyone else has it figured out socially except them. In this episode, I want to slow that story way down. I’m joined by sociologist Dr. Janice McCabe to talk about why college friendships aren’t nearly as automatic as we’ve been led to believe—and why that struggle is often less personal than it feels. We talk about: Why friendship often takes longer to form than students expect How “friendship markets” open and close on college campuses Why clinging to the first friends you meet can sometimes backfire How dorms, orientation programs, and campus structure shape social life The three common friendship network styles Dr. McCabe sees in her research This conversation is for parents worried about an unhappy college kid, students who feel behind socially, and anyone who’s ever assumed that everyone else has friendship figured out. More than anything, this episode is a reminder that friendship is a process—and that there is always another opportunity ahead, even when it doesn’t feel that way. MEET DR. JANICE McCABE Dr. Janice McCabe is an associate professor of sociology and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies and the Allen House Professor at Dartmouth College. She teaches courses on gender, youth, education, social problems, and research methods, and she currently serves as President of the Sociology of Education Association. Her research focuses on friendship networks, identity, and how gender, race/ethnicity, and social class shape social connections. Her work has been featured in outlets including The Washington Post, Time, NPR, New York Magazine, and The Boston Globe. ▶ WATCH MORE EPISODES..... ✅ Episode 173: What Makes a Friendship Last (with Sunny & Jenn) 👉This Video Link: • Episode 173: What Really Makes a Friendshi... ✅ Episode 170: The Friend Who Really Sees You 👉This Video Link: • Episode 170: The Friend Who Really Sees Yo... ✅ Episode 156: The Four Biggest Lessons I've Learned About Friendship (and also about podcasting) 👉 This Video Link: • Episode 156: The 4 Biggest Lessons I’ve Le... ✅ Episode 146: Tolerate Uncertainty & Stop Overthinking in Your Friendships 👉 This Video Link: • Episode 146: Tolerate Uncertainty & Stop O... ✅ Episode 155: Moving to a New Town, Making New Friends, and Building Community 👉 This Video Link: • Episode 155: Moving to a New Town, Making ... ✅ Episode 144: The Secret Power of Changing The Venue in Your Friendship 👉 This Video Link: • Episode 144: The Secret Power of Changing ... ✅ Episode 143: The Law of Rejection in Friendships @dearninafriendship and @HelpMeHarlan 👉This Video Link: • Episode 143: The Law of Rejection in Frien... 🌟 LET’S CONNECT OVER ALL THINGS FRIENDSHIP! 💛 Substack Newsletter: https://dearnina.substack.com 💛 / nina-badzin-179b1284 💛 / dearninafriendship 💛 / dearninafriendship 💛 / dearninab 💛 / ninabadzin 💛 https://ninabadzin.com 💛 Threads: https://www.threads.net/@dearninafrie... #FriendshipAdvice #HowToBeABetterFriend #ConversationSkills #DearNina #FriendshipPodcast #AdultFriendship #AskMoreQuestions #FriendshipChallenge #conversation #betterconversations #friendshipadvice #friendshipskills #friendshipgoals #collegefriends #collegefriendships #sociology #collegelife
