Curatorial statement: Featuring a musical invocation of Alain Clavier by Montréal’s Charbonneau / Amato, this interlude begins with a man enjoying a small patch of sun among the concrete while cars speed by. As he basks in the light we dive into a dream set in Kootenay, British Columbia. We follow the man through a mind-expanding trip into luminous, glacial hallucination, visions of alpine flowers, big-horned sheep and roasted eggplants. As the sun sets on his day in Kootenay, so does his dream of escaping his concrete environment. These short films depicted the value of national parks as places for enjoyment, reflection and healing and did so with a unique artistic vision. In the early 1990s, the Interludes vanished from television, consigned to the archives of the National Film Board. Now four decades later, not only has the full series been lovingly restored to its original splendor from the 16mm negatives, but a cohort of experimental filmmakers and musicians have produced a new series of Public Service Announcements that celebrate the aesthetic of the 70s-era films. Shot on 16mm, these new productions follow the cinematic codes of the original works and are scored by contemporary Canadian musicians inspired to reinterpret Clavier’s mesmerizing soundtrack. Like the originals, these Public Service Announcements capture the tranquility and restorative nature of Canada’s national parks and celebrate the artistic legacy of Parks Canada.
