The Metropolitan Cathedral of Manaus - Nossa Senhora da Conceição better known as Catedral de Manaus or Igreja Matriz, is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Manaus. It is located at Praça XV de Novembro, in the Historic Center of Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas. Since 2017 its parish priest is Father Joaquim Hudson Ribeiro. Inaugurated in 1877, the cathedral dates back to the old chapel built in 1695 by Carmelite missionaries. The façade is divided into two floors, with few ornamental elements, the 6 bells being imported from Europe and installed in 1875. The cathedral maintains a prominent position in the landscape of downtown Manaus. Located on a small elevation, in front of the Port of Manaus, it was the first major architectural work carried out in the city. Among the events that marked its history are the visits of the Brazilian Imperial Family, in 1927, and of Pope John Paul II, in 1980, when he made his first apostolic trip to Brazil.
